How I came to be writing a book

September 27, 2018

I’m an entrepreneur and love the thrill and excitement of building businesses from start-up phase.

With my hardworking team we built GPS Wealth, my most recent business and arguably Australia’s most awarded Financial Services Licensee from a standing start to over 300 licensed advisers and accountants. All achieved in just over six years.

A lot of hard work by a lot of great people, believe me. Many of these people I’m still very close to today.

As the largest shareholder I’d taken GPS Wealth as far as I could. After years of constant travel across the country recruiting advisers and accountants whilst living in hotel rooms Monday to Friday it was time to slow down and perhaps start another chapter in my life.

So, I decided to retire from corporate life forever. I guess that decision was also prompted with sale of GPS Wealth for 20 million dollars in July 2017 to a company listed on the Australian Stock Exchange.

People said, ‘Greg you’ll get completely bored being retired”. But I had a plan and that was to write a fiction novel. It was one of those things on my bucket list.

I’ve always had an imagination, always been full of ideas which helped in building my businesses in both accounting and financial services over the last twenty plus years.

Most of my marketing ideas in the business world came from my walks along the beach at Noosa, Queensland where I’ve lived for the last 27 years. I think it has something to do with the feeling of the sand under my feet along with the sound of the ocean. For me it was my creative time where weird and wonderful ideas came to me.

So late December 2017 I hopped on a plane and set myself up for a couple of months in bungalows by the beaches of Koh Samui and Phuket, Thailand and started spending a few hours each morning working on my first novel.

The storyline for this novel came from my daily walks along the beaches of Noosa and Thailand. It’s a work of fiction.

I finished the first draft of the book in July 2018. Half the novel was written whilst living by the beach in Koh Samui and Phuket. The other half written on my outdoor dining table overlooking the water in Noosa. And of course, many, many walks along the idyllic beaches of Thailand and Noosa to aid me my creative thought process and build the story line.
